Support Our Local Nonprofits

The people of the University of Virginia have a long history of giving to the organizations that strengthen our community.

That's because UVA's commitment to being a good neighbor in Charlottesville and the surrounding region runs deep. Historically, one of the most popular ways we have done this is through the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC). Due to some changes at the state level, this year's options for giving will look a bit different. Specifically, some state agencies, including UVA and UVA Health, will not be able to use payroll deduction to give. Instead, the UVA community will have two options for giving in 2023:

Option 1: Give directly to a nonprofit of your choice. There are literally hundreds of organizations in our region, supporting everything from early childhood education to the environment to housing and food security. While no list is complete, you can find a list of some area nonprofits below. You can also visit the Center for Nonprofit Excellence or the United Way of Greater Charlottesville for more local charities. Please note that your direct donations will not be reported to UVA, and because your gift would be direct, it would not be subject to the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign's 10% administrative fee, meaning your money goes directly to the organization(s) of your choice.

Option 2: Give to nonprofits using a credit or debit card, through the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign website. Please note that you may see payroll deduction listed, but unfortunately payroll deduction is not available for UVA or UVA Health employees this year. The last day for credit or debit card donations is Jan. 31, 2024. Gifts made through the CVC are subject to the 10% administrative fee.

Gifts by either of these methods count toward the 2023 tax year if made before Jan. 1, 2024. Any gifts made between Jan. 1 and Jan. 31, 2024, will count toward the 2024 tax year. Many UVA employees who participated in the 2022 Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign and who gave through payroll deductions would also be counted in the 2023 tax year.
